NEI’s Unique History & Heritage
The first survey in South Texas and the first basketball in America.

The Blucher name is synonymous with pioneering South Texas surveying. Mr. Conrad Blucher was the last of three Blucher generations of Nueces County Surveyors, whose service spanned from the mid 1800's to 1954. The Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science at Texas A & M University - Corpus Christi was dedicated in his name in 1987.

The Naismith name was, and remains, a nationally recognized name. Mr. James S. Naismith first came to Corpus Christi in the early 1930’s as the project engineer for the construction of the Corpus Christi seawall. In 1891, Mr. Naismith's father, James Naismith, invented the game of basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts, and later was the first inductee into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

In 1949, Conrad S. Blucher and James S. Naismith jointly founded the firm of Blucher and Naismith, Inc. In 1961, James P. Naismith, a son of James S. Naismith, joined the firm. He purchased Mr. Blucher’s interest in 1968 and the name was changed to Naismith Engineers, Inc. He served as president of the firm until 1989. James S. Naismith continued active with the firm until his death in 1980. James P. Naismith entrusted the firm to several of his key engineering professionals in 1989, who re-named the company Naismith Engineering, Inc. (NEI). Mr. Steven F. Hiltpold served as president from 1989 until his death in 1990. Mr. Rendell C. Webb, Jr., has served as president since 1990.
